Remember: If you are interested in purchasing Broadband that includes set-up, installation and configuration services, always check out the company selling the Broadband service before you buy, check they have the expertise & knowledge to advise you properly.

Some companies may resell Broadband on someone else's behalf and may intend to use this as a way of selling you other technical products and services. Broadband services such as ADSL are simply ways of squeezing more information down physical media, i.e. in most cases a telephone line.

The benefits of Broadband are NOT something new... fast connections to the Internet and from one location to another have been available for many years. The main difference with Broadband is that the cost is very cheap.

Our advice on Broadband is...if you are a home user or small enterprise ensure you have the necessary security in place within your set-up. Broadband is different to other types of Internet connection in that you are connected for a longer period than with other traditional types of connection. This means that you should take Security very seriously as an intruder has more time to attack your computer system. Always use a router which includes a hardware firewall and ensure you have up to date antivirus software installed on your computer/s.

If set-up and configuration is included with your service ask some basic questions such as...

What contention ratio will my service have?

Do you supply a router instead of a modem?

Why is a router better than a modem?

Who owns the Broadband service?

Can you provide statistics on the uptime of the service over a fixed period of time?

How long have you been in business?

Can you explain what VPN means?

What does DMZ mean?

How does a firewall protect us from the dangers of being connected to the Internet?

Can you explain the difference between a fixed and dynamic IP address?
